Mission Hills is wonderfully central: Balboa Park, Little Italy, Old Town, downtown, the harbor and the airport are all close, but the neighborhood still feels residential. This is not meant to be a directory of San Diego — it is a shortcut to the places we think are worth knowing about.
October in San Diego
Late October is often one of our nicest times of year: warm afternoons, cooler evenings and fewer summer crowds. It can still get surprisingly hot, especially inland, so pack for layers rather than “fall” in the East Coast sense.
☀️ What the weather can feel like
Coastal October is usually mild and dry, with an average monthly temperature around 68°F. Warm spells into the 80s can absolutely happen. Evenings can feel cool near the water, so bring a light jacket or sweater.
🧳 What we’d pack
Light layers, comfortable walking shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen, a swimsuit, and one light jacket for evenings. If you plan to hike inland, check the weather at the actual trail — it can be 10–15°F hotter than it is at the house.
🧟 Gaslamp Zombie Crawl
For a very different kind of night: the Gaslamp’s 21+ Halloween bar crawl runs Oct. 23, 24, 30 and 31. Costumes, clubs and a lot of people — definitely not subtle.
🐘 Safari Park Autumn Festival
Weekend seasonal programming at the Safari Park through Oct. 25. If you go, make a day of it and see the new Elephant Valley.
🎃 Zoo HalGLOWeen + Belmont Fall Fest
The Zoo has evening Halloween programming Friday–Sunday in October; Belmont Park runs its Beachside Fall Fest through Halloween.
💀 Día de los Muertos in Old Town
Altars begin appearing throughout Old Town during October, building toward the Día de los Muertos weekend at the end of the month and Nov. 1–2. This is one of the better reasons to visit Old Town.

Balboa Park + the Zoo
You can easily spend half a day simply walking Balboa Park’s Spanish Colonial architecture, gardens and museums. Don’t feel obligated to see every museum — wander and choose what interests you.

Next to the San Diego Museum of Art in the sculpture garden. Great for a drink, casual bite and live music.

San Diego Zoo
Yun Chuan and Xin Bao are at Panda Ridge. The Zoo is enormous, so give yourself time. If you want an actual sit-down meal and cocktail instead of attraction food, make a reservation at Albert’s Restaurant in the Lost Forest.
Beyond the Zoo
🐘 San Diego Zoo Safari Park — Worth the Drive
Make a day of it. See the new Elephant Valley, ride the included Africa Tram, and consider reserving lunch at Mkutano House overlooking the elephants. Adventurous? Flightline Safari lets you zipline over the savanna. Special safaris cost extra and should be booked ahead.
🦋 Butterfly Jungle
If you return during its spring run, the Safari Park transforms the Hidden Jungle aviary into a walk-through butterfly habitat. It requires a separate timed ticket in addition to park admission.
🦁 Lions Tigers & Bears — Alpine
This is one we feel good recommending. It is a nonprofit rescue sanctuary, not a roadside animal attraction, and your visit supports lifelong care for rescued big cats, bears and other animals. Guided visits require reservations; keeper-assisted feeding experiences are available.
🦦 Nurtured by Nature — Otter Swim
A genuinely unusual San Diego-area experience in Valley Center: a reservation-only animal encounter that includes time in a heated pool with Asian small-clawed otters. Limited, expensive and very special — book far in advance.
SeaWorld
A classic visitor attraction if it is on your list, but between admission, paid parking and food it can become an expensive day quickly. We don’t have a particular dining recommendation there.

La Jolla sea-cave kayaking
Paddle from La Jolla Shores through the Ecological Reserve toward the caves. Cave entry depends on conditions.
Coronado kayaking / SUP
Glorietta Bay is protected and calmer; Ferry Landing also has rentals.
Surfing
Lessons and rentals are easy to find in the beach neighborhoods.
USS Midway
The aircraft carrier museum on the Embarcadero is one of the classic visitor attractions that is genuinely interesting.
Maritime Museum / Star of India
Historic ships on the waterfront — easy to combine with the Midway and a bay walk.

Those tiny two-seat GPS-guided sightseeing cars you may see buzzing around town.
Drive-your-own speedboat tour
San Diego Speed Boat Adventures takes guests out in small two-person boats on a guided harbor route.
Harbor / whale-watching cruises

Cabrillo National Monument
Lighthouse, coastal trails, tide pools and some of the best panoramic views of the bay, downtown, Coronado and Pacific.
Sunset Cliffs
Simple, beautiful and free. Go near sunset and stay back from unstable cliff edges.

Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve — best all-around visitor hike; ocean cliffs and rare Torrey pines. Try Guy Fleming for short/easy or combine trails with the beach.
Annie’s Canyon — short slot-canyon adventure with lagoon/ocean views.
Sunset Cliffs — coastal bluff walking rather than a true hike.
Cabrillo National Monument — lighthouse, views, coastal trail and tide pools.
Los Peñasquitos Canyon — flatter network with creek/riparian scenery and a seasonal waterfall.
Moderate / workout
Cowles Mountain — classic city workout, roughly 3 miles round trip and crowded for a reason.
Mission Trails — huge trail network; Oak Canyon, Kwaay Paay, Fortuna peaks, Cowles and Pyles give you lots of choices.
Iron Mountain — exposed Poway hike with broad summit views.
Black Mountain — convenient north-city summit hike.
Lake Hodges — flexible trail mileage around the reservoir.

Potato Chip Rock / Mt. Woodson — iconic photo hike; long, exposed and busy.
Stonewall Peak — beautiful mountain hike in Cuyamaca.
Volcan Mountain — Julian-area mountain scenery.
Eagle Rock — Pacific Crest Trail hike near Warner Springs.
Garnet Peak — Laguna Mountains views.
Cedar Creek Falls — strenuous Ramona waterfall hike; permit required and heat is serious.
Three Sisters Falls — challenging backcountry outing; verify current access/conditions before attempting.
The Slot — dramatic desert slot canyon in Anza-Borrego; save for cooler weather.
